Her thoughts on book selections are wonderful. I think the Grandma's Club model from Kathy is fabulous. Can't wait to walk into Bear Pond Books some day. Or, perhaps, can I order online?

This post reminds me that I love my 2 indies, despite the drive. We head 45 minutes north into Georgia, for The Bookshelf of Thomasville. We used to have one, many years ago, run by a gal I ended up being in a critique group with. As a literacy specialist and instructional coach, I often see misguided parents and teachers "censor" kids' reading choices for the very reasons Jane suggests, in addition to well- meaning educators pushing the biweekly book report routine. Those actions can have a terribly negative consequence on a child's relationship with books and reading. Kudos for your excellent post and to Jane for keeping the literary world thriving in her corner of the woods! I created a program there along w/the owner's sister, a gifted educator, called the Grandma's Club. no fees to join, just monthly talks on a topic and books K-8 picked by us. I book talked & gave them a list, while Vicki worked w/the kids on a project. All club members received 10% off ou list for that moth and the books were displayed.
Kathy Halseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11600954824509054774noreply@blogger.com
